Pressestimmen

"Rawlik is one of today's great conjurers of mythos, magic, mayhem, and monsters. Disregard the trail of green foul smoke that emanates when you open the covers of STRANGE COMPANY, because buried (unburied?) inside are creatures that would just as soon cheat at cards as detonate the universe into dust. Monsters and mythologies pulled from the silver screen blend with great literary beasts, a battle that shakes the foundations of reality. Readers beware--these tales will suck you in with razor-tipped claws and fling you carelessly into the void." --Philip Fracassi, author of BEHOLD THE VOID"Twisting tales of the macabre ensnare your attention with stories from Arkham, the North Pole, and the Old West. Deals with the devil are made while Dr. Frankenstein's and Herbert West's respective formulas work in tandem with unnatural forces. Enjoy a thrilling mix of tales." --Ashley Dioses, author of DIARY OF A SORCERESS"Is Lovecraftian pulp-punk a thing? Because that's what Rawlik's doing here, at its action-packed, cinematic best!" --Christine Morgan, HORROR FICTION REVIEW"Pete Rawlik is one of the most prolific and talented Lovecraftian writers out there. His work is a joy to read." --Mike Davis, THE LOVECRAFT E-ZINE

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Five years ago when my wife shamed me into picking up my pen again, one of the first things I started writing was a mash up novel of Lovecraftian characters, and I really wanted Herbert West to be part of that team. Unfortunately, I'm a stickler for established chronologies, and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't tell the story I wanted to tell with West in it. Enter Dr. Stuart Hartwell. He was the perfect solution, he had all of West's skills, but his timeline was mine to play with. But, I didn't know who he was, or what motivated him. So I wrote a story about him, and another, and then another. Quickly the mash up novel was set aside and all my time was spent focused on Hartwell. Those stories became the novel Reanimators. Now, just a year later that mash up novel I wanted to work on. The one that was called at various times The League of Lovecraftian Gentlemen, The Miskatonic Club, The Miskatonic Men's Aide Society, The Arkham Oddfellowes - well that became The Weird Company and that hits the streets in September. Hartwell is back, but this time he's not alone, he and his cohort have been recruited by . . . Well you'll just have to read the book now won't you. This is the book I wanted to write from the start, and if you liked Reanimators, you will adore The Weird Company.

Being a reader of the author's longer works, I was eager to read shorter tales. I was not disappointed at all.

A collection of Peter Rawlik's shorter works. His stories are a fun mashup of classic horror/pulp tales and his unique take on HPL's mythos. Want a futuristic tale of the Battle For Arkham? Or how about pulp heroes defending a steampunk world from the horrors beyond? How about one hell (or other underworld) of a card game ? You get this, and so much more.

Hello, this collection of tales was very good. It seemed that you would join in a part of a larger story. Most of these could be full length novels. Thanks.

“Is Lovecraftian pulp-punk a thing? Because that’s what Rawlik’s doing here, at its action-packed, cinematic best!” – Christine Morgan, author of Lakehouse InfernalYes, that’s me, blurbing this book all official and stuff! An honor to be asked, a pleasure to do. I’ve shared many a Mythos anthology TOC with Peter Rawlik, and his stuff has always been among the books’ bests. He’s got a way of taking a genre that’s normally overbloated with dense stuffy wordiness and making it both accessible and entertaining without losing any of the cosmic horror feel. This collection proves it beyond any shadows-over-innsmouth of a doubt. The stories are grouped into three sections – “Mainstream Mythos,” “Other Horrors,” and “Alternate Mythos,” each encompassing a different sub-style but all carrying the same skill, immersion, and talent. The opening tale deftly combines a classic carnival freakshow with a familiar name in reanimation circles … repercussions and characters of which also appear in some of the subsequent stories for that nice same-universe feel. Connections to certain famous works, including Frankenstein and Jekyll & Hyde, appear throughout, as do references to others of the author’s projects. Some are done epistolary-fashion, told via letters and journals, transcripts, statements, etc., as is fitting for the genre. Setting-wise, there’s everything from the dusty Old West to the gritty noir city streets, from sleepy seaside towns with secrets to the post-Biblical-apocalypse, from the cold Arctic to airships on high. There are monsters galore, eldritch and indescribable (yet wonderfully described!)My favorites include “Things Change” (cosmic on a cosmic scale and timetable indeed!), “The Gumdrop Apocalypse” (an odd departure into twisted fairy tales, another I always enjoy!), and the truly outstanding “The Nomenclature of Unnameable Horrors.”
